The family & their wine estate

We go back to the roots of this wonderful piece of land, which means so much to many people and gives them beautiful hours, days, and weeks. As the third generation at SCHLOSS PLARS, we continue the legacy initiated by our grandfather Franz in the early 20th century, with his pioneering efforts in viticulture and cellar management. His unwavering dedication has given rise to an array of distinctive wines, each a testament to his commitment.

The family

It all started with our grandfather Franz. Even before he found his home at SCHLOSS PLARS in Lagundo near Merano, Italy, in 1911, he had already discovered his calling in wine. He had worked in viticulture, trained at the Klosterneuburg wine school in Austria, and was himself a descendant of a farming family. In the 1970s, seeking to embrace change while honouring their heritage, our parents expanded the family wine estate to welcome guests, all the while staying true to our viticultural roots. Wine cultivation remained the heartbeat of SCHLOSS PLARS, encompassing everything from pruning and thinning to harvesting and, initially, modest wine development. Under Andreas, the third generation, wine has become even more central to our ethos, with all processes - from production to ageing and sales - managed in-house at our vineyard. The fourth generation is already gearing up, with son Moritz.

The terroir

The diversity of our terroir is reflected in the diversity of our wines. In the Raut wine location, excellent Vernatsch and Lagrein grapes mature on humus moraine soil, thanks to the dry-hot climate. The Torggl wine location impresses with its sandy and rocky soils, producing excellent Sauvignon, Lagrein, and Merlot grapes. And in the Broat wine location, in addition to granite, slate, gneiss, and clayey sand, the well-known Vinschg'er wind provides the necessary minerality for our Pinot Blanc. Augmented by South Tyrol's characteristic abundance of Italian sunshine, our terroir forms an extraordinary tapestry of oenological richness.

The cultivation

We have been cultivating wine here for 3 generations – and the 4th is already prepared to carry on this heritage. Over almost a century, we've continually refined our approach, from careful pruning to meticulous bottling. We blend deep oenological knowledge, cutting-edge cellar practices, and our family's rich heritage to tailor our methods precisely to our terroir. The extraordinary location of our vineyards, bathed in sunlight, enriched by clay-rich soils, and endowed with a unique 'soul' distinctive to our terroir, enhances our efforts. The result is a range of premium quality wines that, we must confess, fill us with pride and, we hope, captivate wine enthusiasts far and wide.

The wine

It is this deep connection between the land and our family that makes our wines special and has earned us recognition and awards over the years. The soulful manual labor, from pruning to harvesting, impressively brings out the character of our red and white wines – for the eye, the nose, and the palate.

Red wines

Whether it's the fresh, juicy Vernatsch "Wonger", enchanting with its crystal-clear ruby red and a clean fruit bouquet of cherry and raspberry scents, the fresh, juicy, ruby-red Pinot Noir "Gonter", ideally suited to accompany light meat dishes, or our powerful Merlot-Lagrein cuvées – "Yhrn" and "Lassier" – convincing with a purple cloak and complex aromas, from red forest berries to dark chocolate and delicate roasted notes: they embody our dedication to grape cultivation and winemaking. Whether silky, elegant, or robust, each wine is a testament to the synergy of Algund's sun-drenched soils, meticulous craftsmanship, and the genuine passion that resides at the very core of SCHLOSS PLARS.
